Similarly, it frustrates me that in reality, a smoking gun is enough to have a clearly evil villain lose their power over people.

When the Penguin's audio is revealed to have played 'this stinking city like a harp from hell', when Amon is revealed to be a hypocritical waterbender, when Arcturus is revealed to the public to have fed Tarsonis to the Zerg...

However, in real life, you don't even need a shapeshifter to keep people thinking a monstrous man is innocent. Just a powerful PR campaign.

Also, a lot of people simply don't care if someone they hero-worship is proved to be guilty of something awful. Look at how many people know Chris Brown beat the shit out of Rhianna, but dismiss it and remain fans of him.

Or think the victim was to blame. See: rape victims, the current ICE murder of a woman where they are finding all kinds of ways to blame her for being murdered.
