What was your experience?

I haven't donated a liver but I did donate a kidney, if that helps since it's still a living donor? I didn't have any issues with my experience, though actually my sibling was supposed to donate originally and got cold feet day of surgery so we had to go through all the pre-surgery stuff for me all over again. I had to take several days at the hospital doing all kinds of tests to be sure my health was good, not just the organ I was donating but also stuff like a mammogram and a PAP smear, I had to do a blood glucose test (the one where they make you drink something super sugary, my mom said it would taste bad but it tasted like those orange barrel drinks I used to have as a kid), stuff like that. I also had to see a psychologist to be sure my mental health was okay and that I would be all right in the recovery period.

I was groggy after the surgery itself and in a lot of pain for the first few days. They want you up and walking as soon as they can, with nurse help. I was eating solid foods within about a day after (I donated to my mom and we still joke about it, I had a small stomach ache so they made me eat just pudding and then I walked down to see her and she had a sandwich and a cookie, not fair). I took about a month off work. I had painkillers for the first week or so and they let me have one refill, I only took a couple of those though because by then Tylenol was enough. The main thing I found different post-surgery was some fatigue, not enough to affect my day to day life but for the next couple months sometimes on weekends or after work I would need a small nap. That went away after a while and I haven't had any complications since. I do see my mom's kidney doctor once a year just to check up on things, I'm one of his favorite patients because it's always such a quick visit due to no complications.
