When I was a kid ~20+ years ago, I participated in a Neopets forum's secret Santa event. I spent December saving up points to get a decent item with nothing in return. Then I realized I was matched with an inactive user. So I didn't even know if they used the item. I felt so left out since other members were having so much fun.

Even though Neopets is super low stakes, I never participated in an online secret Santa again. I've only done it IRL at work. Maybe if I find a decent fandom Discord again I could give it another shot, but I'm not in any communities that do them.

It's awkward to me now, but I was SOOOO upset as an 11 year old... Sometimes I wonder if I was paired with an inactive user on purpose, but it's water under the bridge now.
