Having a fic contest entry basically ignored by readers. Yeah, I know, it's up to the judges. That wasn't the problem. I didn't care if I won or not (even though it had been IMO my best effort at the time). Then someone sent in a fic with a similar title that everybody then fawned over. It's stupid as hell but felt like a gut punch and it turned me off of writing for a good while. I never entered another contest again.

The worst part is, I did it to myself. I'd meant to send it to a different contest but found out my type of entry wasn't allowed, so I had to settle for that other contest. I should've just put it up on a fic site if it was just going to be ignored. At least I wouldn't have had to deal with seeing a similarly titled story getting all the attention and my stupid ass jealous feelings about it (in all fairness, the other story was REALLY good, so the attention wasn't surprising in the least).

(Actually, the worst part was venting to a friend who just thought I was being a psychotic idiot who just needed to get over it and wasn't any support at all. Of course I was being irrational but holy Christ, it's not hard to say "oh man, that sucks" even if you don't completely get it.)

That last bit is so true. Sometimes people just need sympathy for feeling crappy, not a lecture. It's not hard to say "that sounds frustrating" or "sorry you're dealing with that" even if you don't feel the same.
