Question for people who know how the Tumblr population thinks

(Anonymous) 2026-01-12 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm too afraid to ask this on Tumblr, but I want to gauge what they would think. I was thinking of reprising my cosplay from ten years ago (updated for my current weight) of Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way, but would that be bad given what My Immortal is based on? Or is it far enough removed from that stuff to be okay?

There's a My Immortal spoof post that's been in the Top search in one of my fandoms and has... *checks* a few hundred of notes and no negative comments, and has been around for about half a year. My estimate based on that is you'll probably be alright.

If you're still worried, I think you could do the cosplay and say you're Generic Fanfic Self Insert Goth Wizard Girl (Not Based on Any Real Fanfic of Any Real Books) wink wink. There are some other posts that want to talk about aspects of Harry Potter without mentioning it by name use phrases like "Generic Wizard School" and even some of my most "Don't talk about the H-P-word books ever" minded mutuals have shared them.

Is HP cosplay frowned on now?

There's somebody out there who will get super-uber-dooper mad about it. You're unlikely to run into them whereever you're cosplaying. Good luck, god's speed, put your middle fingers up to those preps.

Honestly, try not to care about it. The people who would get mad are not people you'd want in your life, anyway. Turn off anonymous asks, block anyone who tries to give you grief, and live your best cosplay life.

Where are you doing this cosplay? If it's at a local fannish event or convention, I wouldn't worry. I still use Tumblr and the average "Tumblr population" doesn't reflect how IRL fandom feels. I was at a queer cafe who played Harry Potter movie adaptions, and the artists alley at the last con I went to in November had some HP merch. (I don't like HP, for the record, I hate it. But it's still common to see IRL.) The "Tumblr types" are more likely to open up their phone and make a rude post, than harass someone about it.

Personally, if I was at a con and saw a My Immortal cosplay, I'd give you a thumbs up because I read it in high school and thought it was hilarious. Anyone who gives you shit for cosplaying a troll fic *loosely based on HP* and is just as much a parody of mall goth culture is probably too young to know about it, or not worth your time.
