Trope Question

(Anonymous) 2026-01-14 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
How on Earth did allergies, asthma and tighty-whities become associated with nerds in TV and movies?

I'd guess that the first two makes it hard for them to do the sports and outdoor activities favoured by non-nerds, and... maybe the tighty whities are responsible for the high pitched nerd voice?

Allergies/asthma = oh you're so weak you can't even breathe normal like a real human being (also means you can't sports like the anon above said)

Tighty-whities = BASIC. AS. FUCK. You have no game, no suave, no cool. Cool people wear colors, even boxer-briefs are sexier than plain briefs. White briefs is plain as fuck, it's the default, and anyone who prefers them is boring and default.

the "how" is 80s media, from the Revenge of the Nerds/Porky's era onward. One writer or director paints the picture, everyone else sees how much bank it makes and rolls with it, after a number of repeats it becomes a trope.

Tighty-whities probably also mean your mom bought them for you

I don't know anyone who thinks those are comfortable

LOL I was gonna say, I don't know a single adult guy who willingly wears those.

As a nerd without asthma or allergies to the outdoors, I was so jealous of the kids with asthma who got out of cross-country runs at school.

along similar lines, why does "mouth breather" mean stupid? it just means you have sinus problems!!

Right? This time of a year I can never breathe through my nose, and basically all year I can't breathe through my nose at night. Sinus problems allergies, yay.

People with Down Syndrome typically breathe through their mouths so I suspect that's where it came from.

The implication is that you're spreading germs, isn't it?
