I buy old teen magazines from the 90's on eBay. When I see one with a deceased teen idol on the cover and the price for it is ridiculously high, I refer to the prices as "Bleeding Gums Murphy prices".

Bonus Secret: I have actually bought some of those ridiculously high priced magazines.

What do you do with the magazines? I'm not really a collector of "stuff" so I'm always curious.

May I ask why exactly?

Explanation from OP

"Bleeding Gums Murphy prices" is a reference to the Simpsons episode where he dies and Lisa wants to buy his album Sax on the Beach. From the show's fandom wiki:

Still stricken with grief, Lisa proclaims that the best way to honor Murphy's memory is by having his album played at the local jazz station. Lisa observes it in The Android's Dungeon store for $250, but after hearing that Bleeding Gums is dead, Comic Book Guy doubles the price to $500.

So you buy them to honour the celebrities that have recently passed? I mean, fair enough. I can't imagine what they'd cost, tbf, but as long as it's not eating you out of house and home, I'm glad you found something that has given you comfort.

Ever see any old issues of SASSY magazine up for sale?

(Anonymous) 2026-01-16 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen any personally since my focus is on the teenybopper ones like in the secret, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a bunch of them on eBay.

Ahhh... I recognize all those people. And two are deceased, so I can only imagine how much that issue would go for.

omg I was focused on River Phoenix, I didn't even notice Cory Haim. Oops.

I think one of my sisters actually had this one. they liked Bop over Teen Beat. I bet they threw it all out years ago, though, one is very into not saving anything from the past. I had no idea one could make money with this, but given the 80s toy and cartoon aftermarket I shouldn't be surprised.

OMG I love this XD

My parents were smart not to allow me to sign up for magazine subscriptions until I started working and paid for them myself lmao I used to beg my mom to let me buy the teen magazines. She never said yes to the Teen Bop magazines. I remember being jealous of my friends who could buy those magazines.

*should try to start magazines thread(s) in GC! I could gab for ages about magazines*
