I think most (if not quite all) of the problems the book fans have regarding Francesca’s future romance with Michaela instead of Michael would be solved by simply having Michaela be a trans woman in the series.

I think a trans character would be where even the most "woke" fans would draw the line for historical inaccuracy.

That's why I, who have no investment in this show, would like her to be trans. Make the transphobes take their masks off.

I don't watch this show, but this picture of Hannah Dodd makes me wish Disney were doing their live action version of Beauty and the Beast now because she literally looks like un-animated Belle.

I really don't think so. If people have an issue with it being a queer relationship, it would still be a queer relationship. If they have an issue with the character being a woman because of how Michael was characterized, that issue would still be there.
