I can't stand seeing beards onscreen, in a show, movie, or game. If I'm reading a book and someone has one I just imagine they don't, unless the character is an old man or a slob. I can't get past imagining how awful they must smell.

I was going to say. OP does realize that people who have beards wash them the same way you wash your hair, right?

Nayrt, but in my observation a lot of guys with long bushy beards, specifically, don't necessarily take care to keep their beards clean/tidy, or their head hair either

I was going to say this exact thing! All the guys that I know that have beards wash them, comb them, oil them…it’s personal grooming, ffs. If the beard is stinky, it’s usually someone very old or very young.

I get it if this is a personal hang-up, we’ve all got things we’re not strictly rational about, but you do know that in real life, beards don’t necessarily smell awful, right? With a reasonable level of personal hygiene, they’re on a similar level as having long hair.

I don't assume beards smell, but I don't want a guy with a beard's face between my thighs, to be fully honest.

I'm a bit bummed out when attractive actors grow full beards, because it hides their bone structure and I like nice cheekbones and a cut jawline and bewitching smirk. Beards belong on Santa, ZZ Top, and LOTR dwarves.

Also my husband has a beard (not long like the secret photo, the hair is quite close to his face still) and ngl it's kinda hot seeing his beard all wet after he's been down there.

Do you know people who have smelly unkempt beards irl? Because most of the people I know that have longer beards also have complicated grooming practices for them and they are very clean.

Not OP, but yeah, I was into very nerdy stuff and in my early 20s, this meant being around a lot of guys who were growing their first adult beards and also had poor personal hygiene. And now I work in healthcare with elderly people and again, men with poor hygiene (though this time through no fault of their own). So beards that aren't very closely trimmed are very much a turn-off for me, even though I have also seen men who have well-cared-for beards.

okay yeah I can see how that association would linger. Though it seems like it's the body hygiene not the beard? But still, associations gonna associate.

This is my experience too. The guys I know who have beards are meticulous about keeping them clean and trimmed.

I laugh at people who just assume that hair = bad hygiene. Like, what goes on in your mind? Did you get a headlock from a sweaty bully when you were in grade school, and now associate hair not on one's crown with bad smells?

I know people with medium length beards, but none of them smell bad. Most all of them aren't slobs either. I get not liking beards, especially in a romantic setting, but ehh, that's really a huge assumption. (I'm sure some people would say bigoted as well.)
As long as you don't let this affect your perception of people irl, then you do you OP.

...huh? OP my husband has a beard and I can promise you, it doesn't smell bad. Like even when he does smell bad, the beard is never the source of the stank.

Yeah same. If I taste anything while kissing him, it would be the same if he didn't have the facial hair because weird mouth tastes tend to be in the mouth itself/on the tongue. Such as, in my pre-husband days, I had a boyfriend without a beard who smoked and kissing him, especially after he'd just had a smoke, was infinitely more unpleasant than kissing my bearded husband.

Or they've just met a lot of gross unwashed guys with equally gross unwashed beards? The poor hygiene contingent tends to not be very good about tending to any of the hair on their bodies

I thankfully mostly frequent fandoms that involve magic and/or futuristic technology. So I just imagine the beards are kept clean. I personally find beards really attractive.
