Either that or they have gross unwashed hair themselves and assume everyone else is the same.

Or they've just met a lot of gross unwashed guys with equally gross unwashed beards? The poor hygiene contingent tends to not be very good about tending to any of the hair on their bodies

If someone is gross and unwashed then they're going to be gross and unwashed in general, though. The beard is going to be a tiny fraction of the overall problem and definitely not the part that's going to be the most gross.

Those guys smell enough overall that you're going to be repelled before you get close enough to notice whether the beard has its own distinct smell.
