DK Broster, The Flight of the Heron. Set during the 1745-6 Rising in Scotland. Enemies to (very close) friends, clashes of personal loyalty and duty, shedloads of h/c, actual historical accuracy mostly, wonderful scenery and atmosphere. It's on Gutenberg and Librivox.

If you want fanfic (and you probably will) it's listed under "Jacobite Trilogy", because over half a century after first publication it was re-issued in a single volume with its sequels.

Also by her: The Wounded Name, which is set during the Vendee Rebellion in France and has most of the above dialled up to 11, but lacks its sheer narrative drive; and Mr Rowl, about a Napoleonic officer on the run in England through no fault of his own.
