My grandparents had different beds and rooms, and my parents seriously need to do the same. I agree with you completely.
Honestly I think most of it is the 'that's what my parents did' sorta reluctance. Also the commitment to go from shared to separate, in these days especially, can be an incredibly hard question to ask. There isn't going to be an answer that isn't going to sound rude or outdated, even if it's both reasonable and logical to do so. It's also a monetary commitment that can't be avoided, even if it's just to try it out to see if it works.
