I can't help but feel that any fic tagged with 'poc character' is inherently racist.
Worst is the "canon poc character" tag. It's so useless that it almost comes across as if they mean it as a warning.

B.S. I couldn't read a single Leverage fic since nearly every one had "poc Alec Hardison" as a tag. It turned me off immediately.

What do you mean "poc Alec Hardison" is a tag??? WHYYYYYYYY

And yeah, I don't think of "racist" when I see canon poc character or similar tags, but it's kind of a red flag to me. Never in my life I've read a decent fic with those kind of tags.

I also have questions??? Like "poc Alec Hardison" implies the existence of white Alec Hardison.

I checked, and there's no tag with that text, not even a non-canonized one. Just a 404 error.

Charitably, maybe OP is fudging the details of what fandom they're in, so it's harder for anyone to guess who they are.

On the other hand, maybe they're just making up a guy to get mad at.

Wait what? My brain's been failing me lately but I swear I didn't make that up?? I remember seeing the poc character a lot at one point as unofficial tags and definitely in the context of Alec, and it was kinda the last straw kind of thing.

Fuck if this is all one weird fever dream I don't know what I'll do. I'm so confused.

I know tags like this exist in general, but not that specific one!

Here are all the AO3 tags with "POC" in them, most-used at the top. The popular ones are all "characters who are white in canon" (e.g. Harry Potter), or "characters who don't just have one known/constant canon race" (e.g. Crowley).

And here are all the tags with "Alec Hardison" in them. ...and, uh, the most popular one is "POV Alec Hardison", so now my guess is that you were misreading that. (I'm sure 99% of f!s doesn't need to be told this, but: POV means Point Of View, it's nothing to do with race.)

I guess it could have been tag wrangled, or could you have been misreading "pov"?

I remember some challenges and collections that asked that people tag POC characters so that they could be added. Kind of like a femslash tag for International Day of Femslash?

Granted, that was like, in 2010 or something. So if I did that on some things, sorry or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-24 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
WOW um. that's a thing? I'm with you OP, that's weird.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-24 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I also get a bad vibe from that tag. Every time I see it the fic goes overboard virtue signaling.

OP

I genuinely just don't get the point of it. it's just so blind to try and pat yourself on the back while holding a giant "I swear I'm super inclusive" neon sign. The only half decent way I can see it is if the person is just THAT bad at tagging. But still, ick.

Ugh. At least the raceplay fics are honest about what they’re doing.

(I suppose you could justify this for those Desi Harry Potter fics that kept cropping up?)

OP

Huh, I forgot that was a thing. I don't think I've ever seen it used in that context. It's probably the only way it could make sense, tbh.

Race Bending always weirds me out as well. Book characters are generally exceptions though.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-24 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely see where you're coming from, that's just... weird...

(Anonymous) 2026-01-24 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand it if canon is ambitious on the race.
But when you see it in a movie/show or it's been described this is redundant and weird

(Anonymous) 2026-01-24 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
The wildest version I've seen of this was in fandoms that only have POC in their cast (especially for Asian based media). What the authors seem to want to imply is that a character is more brown than in canon. What they end up doing is saying lighter skinned non-white people are not POC enough.
