Serious answer though: this place is for talking about fandom and being in fandom. Plenty of people enjoy experiencing movies and tv and music they can't relate to but probably are not going to look at a movie, think the acting is superb, and then go write fic about it just because the acting is superb when they enjoyed the spectacle but didn't emotionally connect with any characters in it.

That's a really good point. People get into fandom for a pretty specific set of reasons and relatability is probably high for a large percentage.

Yes, but I see "connecting" and "relating" as two different things.

same here - and I also agree with OP in general. I think I first saw the whole idea of relating to the character pop up in fandom RP, where some people really needed to "relate" and not just connect with the character they RP, which sadly leads to a lot of self-inserting and projecting. I'm not surprised if this has spread to fandom in general, since it also underlies a lot of self-indulgent OOC comfort fic, AU building, and weird fanon takes, for both better and worse.

connecting means you get it, you understand, while relating seems to mean, this character is me and I am this character (not literally but over time it may warp into literally).

Yeah, this is how I've always seen it used - in a sense of "I can project myself onto this character/see myself in them." Connecting is just a "I get where they're coming from" sort of thing, there doesn't have to be any sort of personal similarity there.
