Same. It's basically just a dogwhistle at this point.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, forced diversity definitely exists and it's very obvious when it does.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
[citation needed]

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, one of the biggest examples is the whole "black Cleopatra" bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, there's sometimes a lot of pressure on the one gay/black/female/disabled person in the workplace to be the Face of Diversity, while the actual company does nothing, but I don't think that's the same thing that bigots complain about.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I agree.

+1

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
It could exist, in theory, but in practice it just means the person using the term is a bigot.

Forced diversity is the Burger King Kids Club.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Whenever looking at the cast of a TV show/book/movie/etc. makes me feel like I'm going down a list checking off a bunch of ticky boxes for specific types of minority characters, that's forced diversity.

Me: this advertisement is forced diversity.

You: this movie/show/book is forced diversity.

I think we’re talking about different things.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I like the term "checkbox diversity."

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's a good term, because that's really what it is. Need a black guy, check. Need a fat chick, check. Need an Asian, check. Need a gay/lesbian, check.

It's checking off boxes rather than actually bothering to create characters organically.

Yup

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Totally agree.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
It depends on the context. If someone is complaining about how 'everyone is gay these days!' then yeah that's bigoted. If they're complaining that the Hayes code forced white actors to play different races so the main couple isn't mixed race, then no, that's reasonable.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
It really depends on context for me. If someone has a meltdown about a cast like the 2015 Ghostbusters, then yeah, they’re a bigot. And social media, particularly Facebook, is full of clowns like that.
But also: forced diversity exists in media and it can hurt the production as well as the people they’re supposedly representing. Fetishizing cultural norms, whitewashing POC, minimizing or downplaying the bigotry that minorities face, and portraying everyone as accepting of LGBTQ+ are all ways media contribute to the marginalization of the communities they shoehorn into Middle America Suburbia or Upper Middle Class Urban America. This is because it’s still primarily cishet white men who control either the individual productions or the studios or, more often, both.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm mainly annoyed at productions doing the forced diversity thing and then blame the POC actors and audiences for "being racist" when their overall really bad movie tanks.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a good point. Like, maybe when they're doing checkbox diversity and adding in characters just to try to have a diverse cast, it's a sign that their overall writing and planning is poor, and then they want to turn and point the finger at something other than their shitty decisions?

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I am always kinda mad for actors - they are usually a scapegoat

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
US is so racist, it's always about race there. This actor's great-great-grandmother is part Cherokee so this actor is diverse. Even tho the actor knows nothing about Cherokee culture. Diversity is absolutelly forced in Hollywood right now. And it's a good thing. The whole world needs a breather from Hollywood slop. It's a pity Doctor Who fell victim to this.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-28 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Most times when people complain about forced diversity it just comes off like hate of otherness.

Granted, I do know that there are genuine complaints about "diversity" being used to maximize profit more than giving voice and representation to marginalized groups. How many movies or shows had the one Black/POC/gay friend and their only character trait was either the Nice friend who mostly stands around or they're nothing but the stereotypes of their otherness.
Or like what has been brought up, The Burger King Kids Club XD
