It really depends on context for me. If someone has a meltdown about a cast like the 2015 Ghostbusters, then yeah, they’re a bigot. And social media, particularly Facebook, is full of clowns like that.
But also: forced diversity exists in media and it can hurt the production as well as the people they’re supposedly representing. Fetishizing cultural norms, whitewashing POC, minimizing or downplaying the bigotry that minorities face, and portraying everyone as accepting of LGBTQ+ are all ways media contribute to the marginalization of the communities they shoehorn into Middle America Suburbia or Upper Middle Class Urban America. This is because it’s still primarily cishet white men who control either the individual productions or the studios or, more often, both.

Yeah, this

I'm mainly annoyed at productions doing the forced diversity thing and then blame the POC actors and audiences for "being racist" when their overall really bad movie tanks.

That's a good point. Like, maybe when they're doing checkbox diversity and adding in characters just to try to have a diverse cast, it's a sign that their overall writing and planning is poor, and then they want to turn and point the finger at something other than their shitty decisions?

I also feel like they can then conveniently use it as an excuse à la "See? Diversity bad because people don't like it! So not diversity in the future!".

Yep. No, the problem wasn't the diversity, it was the bad writing, but it’s easier to point the finger at that than it is to admit that your writing stunk.

I am always kinda mad for actors - they are usually a scapegoat
