I think slash (even the shitty, 2000s slash I was reading) helped me develop empathy for gay people as a preteen. I got to work through those first few steps with Avalanche/Cyclopes from X-Men Evolution instead of an actual person.

But, like, it sure wouldn't be great if we went back to the media landscape of the 2000s and we *only* had slash fanfiction again.
