But I've seen a few crossovers that do come across as more self-indulgent than other fic and it has to do with the characters and characterizations. It's hard to explain, but you know the really over the top fans that just think their faves are the best most perfect character ever? And then they write fic about all of their faves being the best and most perfect characters ever together.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it. It's kind of like self inserts and Mary Sues. It's top of the self indulgent pile but I support people writing whatever is fun for them to write. (As long as I'm not forced to read it.)

I can see that. I guess I haven’t run into much of that type in the fandoms where I read fanfiction. Or maybe I click away before I get that far because of other writing issues.

I am unfortunately familiar with crossover fic on the model of “this character is the best and going to show up in another story’s setting to demonstrate how stupid it and all its characters are”. Which feels primarily spiteful to me, but is also a form of self-indulgence, I suppose.

Oh gosh yes, the "my fave is going to come in and show you all how smart they are" is another type of the same type of crossover. Not my cup of tea at all.
