Can I just complain about the weather for a second?

(Anonymous) 2026-01-29 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'm in a state that got that big storm last week and while it wasn't as bad as it was projected to be (extremely thankful for that), we have still been stuck with roads that are just covered in thick compacted ice. The only roads they plow here are the main "emergency routes" and highways. My state's snow plan has always been "just shut everything down and it will melt in a day or two" but this week has only had a high of 20 with the lows being single digits, so barely anything has melted and the neighborhood roads are treacherous. And now we are getting snow on Friday and Saturday. So snow on top of already treacherous icy roads. It's going to be a clusterfuck.

I haven't left my neighborhood in two weeks and I'm going a little stir crazy up in here.

Same! I was going to visit my sister this weekend for the Royal Rumble but that isn't happening. :(

I'm in the tiny corner that didn't get hit by the storm (PNW). We just came off the warmest and driest December on record (it was 60 degrees, which is insane). They're expecting us to hit 60 again next week and we're in a drought. During the winter rainy season. We have the lowest recorded snowpack; we depend on the snowpack to see us through the summer when it's not supposed to rain. This is insane.

60s is wild. Earlier in January we had 60s and even a couple of 70 degree days, which is wild. Our highs are usually mid 40s. The weather is such a mess, we have truly fucked the planet and ourselves.

In January, in my state, we had record high days at the beginning of the month, and now record low days, too 🫠 It's a total mess.

It's hitting the 80s in parts of SoCal, according to my mother.

Ugh, that sounds awful. Complain away!

I was getting all grumpy because this level of cold means my car just won’t start without a jump, even if I make a point of driving it every day to keep the battery charged.

But at least we have cleared roads and not too much ice. Your situation sounds very aggravating and quite frightening.

Bleh. We have had single digit and 'feels like' below zero weather for almost two weeks, plus snow, and it hasn't been *awful*, just so fucking cold and *dry*. My hands are like sandpaper.
I also had to get a guy with a plow to clear my drive of the 3foot barrier of plowed mess the plows pushed up, cleaning the main road.

Ick. That sounds miserable. Lowest it got here this week was 10, which is pretty cold, but not quite as bad as where you are.

I have used up so much lotion lately! And yet my hands are still dry. I found something called "Vaseline all over body balm" and it does a decent job without being too terribly sticky. I use it on the backs of my hands where it's driest, and it seems to have helpd. But still. It sucks.

Man, same. I put on lotion it just seems to vanish, and my skin's as dry as it was before. I've been going to bed with lotion or vaseline on my hands and gloves, but even that doesn't seem to do much. Hate it!

It only became safe to drive here in Dallas because it got warm enough that things melted. The highways were okay, but the other roads weren't. My road and the one connected hadn't been shoveled or even salted. Nor had anything near my office. I had to work from home until today.

My favorite thing about heavy snow is that after clearing my sidewalk, the snow plow comes through and plows all the snow from the street back onto the sidewalk. So I have to clear it again, but now it's a pile of snow up to my hips. I love doing that.

Ha! My city doesn't have snow plows, the really do just wait for it to melt. But I used to live in the North where we regularly got many feet of snow and the snow plow somehow always timed it perfectly to come along and create a wall just as I was finished shoveling the walk or the drive. I swear they wait and watch and then pounce when the timing is the worst.

😱😱😱😱

This snow shit is for the birds. I'm ready to move somewhere with NO winter. The brutal summers are worth it to not have to deal with this.

Going through a brutal and record-breaking summer right now, have you considered a house-swap with me? I think I could deal with snow.

Tell us you live in New England without telling us you live in New England lol.

I'll complain right with you. I too live in a state that rarely gets serious snow/ice. Usually we get a dusting a few times a year, and it has totally gone away/become a nonissue within two days, three at the most. "Just shut everything down and it will melt in a day or two" is EXACTLY how they do things here, too. It has luckily melted off some, but it's still pretty bad, and I'm not sure I can even get my car out of my driveway. I'm having to have my mom drop me off at work because she has a bigger car, I just have a little sedan that can't even get out of the garage. The town also wastes all the tax money, so there are actually other smaller towns nearby that prepared ahead and cleared their roads, while here it's like "lol you're on your own, good luck, we aren't spending money on the streets" and people are so mad and complaining on facebook, but of course nothing changes about it.

Yeah, I think a lot of cities were caught unprepared for this last major snowfall. Mine was the same, normally you don't have to worry too much because we don't usually get heavy snowfall and it usually starts melting after a couple days. Well, some places in my state got over 12" of snow, and the temperatures haven't been above freezing for a couple weeks now. It MIGHT get a little over 32 F next week, but not by much. So all the roads have been very poorly cleared with partial snow/ice build up, and those are the major roads. Most residential areas and side roads haven't been cleared at all.
