Re: National Shutdown Day to protest ICE tomorrow (USA)

What you’re overlooking in the comments is that nationwide there won’t be enough participation to have any effect. Most of the country can’t just skip work or not spend money on necessities. It’s a poorly planned and poorly advertised protest that depends on record numbers it cannot get. It’s too much, too late. Plenty of people who have been joining protests for the last few weeks will be at work in the morning and at protests over the weekend. It isn’t about wanting others to step up; it’s that this is a laughably pointless idea dreamed up by some incredibly privileged and ignorant people.

I couldn't agree more. I've seen better organization a month ahead of boycotting amazon during their sales season.

Not with attitudes like I see here. I agree with ayrt, always an excuse with Americans and never a solution.

Goddamn, literacy is dead. ayrt didn't "overlook" anything at all. You're the one ignoring the fact they understand there are people who can't participate.

Did you miss it? Here it is again:
If your job helps people in need, or you will literally starve for more than a day or two without a missed shift, then obviously don't harm others of kill yourself for this.

It's fucking bean soup discourse all over again. "But I can't personally do that because it's impractical!" Except worse because you're discouraging those who CAN participate from participating.

Yep, literacy is dead because YOU only see that exception sentence and ignore the whole "Ugh shitty Americans just make excuses" tirade. For a lot of people, this isn't about ~starving without a missed shift~, it's "losing a job because you called out last minute to attend a useless boycott". Calling out last minute can have much longer lasting effects on people than just having a bit less money because of a missed shift. And that's not just an issue certain few individuals potentially face, have you lived under a rock the last few years?

The protest had no impact because not enough people participated. Just as everyone was pointing out and what the person you’re defending claimed was typical American excuses and whining.

The circle of "I won't participate because it won't make a difference" to "see it didn't make a difference because people didn't participate" is so sad. And also very American. We just had a huge protest in my city and shut down an ICE detention center. If everyone had just said "eh what's the point" or "it's too cold" or whatever then nothing ever changes.

And there you go missing the point still. No one is saying they don’t agree with protests. No one is saying they won’t participate in protests. THIS protest was poorly planned. It was not designed to shut anything down. It was an empty gesture dreamed up by people who have no idea how to plan and conduct an economic blackout. It was bizarrely combined with walkouts and then planned for such short notice that it literally could not work. That’s it. That’s what so many have been pointing out.

And a lot of people didn't participate because it was too short notice, you cannot be this daft.
