every time a fandom-tropey property escapes containment, it's very clear that a lot of the worst hype is coming from fandom folks who believe that this time, the "rest of the world" will finally come to love and appreciate things that fandom has always loved. Never mind that there's no reason the "rest of the world" could or should love your weird Stucky Coffeehouse AU, or that you can still love what you love despite it having no wider recognition, it always comes down to "I want mainstream society to acknowledge that this weird tropey thing I do over here in my private corner is Loved and Valid and Quality."

Huh. I've never thought about it this way but honestly I see the logic in your stance. I am definitely not a "want the word to see the hype" type of fan. I'm more of a "can we have fandom go back to a semi secret hobby the PR trams and actors don't acknowledge" type of fan.
