Instant messengers were awesome back in the day. Yahoo, ICQ, AOL. Sure, feels a bit like texting feels now but at least those conversations could continue.

I am guilty of having a couple of convos here and then dropping off. One, I'm never sure who's a troll and who isn't, especially when many of us are anon - including me - and two, most of my interests don't align with the interests of folks here, so the most engagement I might have is in random topics like this one. I guess it's like when you don't flex the muscle, it atrophies. But I know that's something I need to work on.

Agreed on Discord... mixed results there. Makes me miss mIRC, but even that got stale when everyone was online 24/7.

I miss AIM. I felt that was great for conversations but also fine when you put an away message and dropped out.

Some people's away messages were some of the funniest things I would read that day.

Used ICQ for years, it was so awesome, I miss it so much. Signal isn't the same....

I think they tried to write out the ICQ notification sound.

I find trolls very obvious here, like when they comment about something bigoted or fire off in a negative way that's often short but begs for attention. ntm, when their responses aren't a response so much as repeating whatever inflammatory thing they said to get attention in the first place. That's a troll. We only have a few so I guess we're lucky in that way.

Otherwise, while there are people who often enforce their erroneously assumed opinion, I don't think they're trolling. Misinformed, yes. But trolling, no.
The fact that this type of platform is something of a dying breed sorta compounds that issue, I think.
