Sailing the high seas

(Anonymous) 2026-02-07 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm seeing a bigger and bigger push back to pirating shows and movies, but how is that even done these days? Are torrents still a thing and if so, how and where? Like, is the pirate bay still a thing? What clients and VPNs do people use these days?

Or are the kids these days using something else entirely?

I use (one of the many) sites that stream TV and movies.

I'm still getting everything via DC++, and have been since the 90s.

How does that work for media? How do you find specific shows/movies and are there any security concerns?

Most people have files shared and the rooms are titled with their specialties (e.g. anime, music, movies, indie, games, etc etc) and you just use the search function to see if anyone in the room has what you're looking for. I typically spend my time in rooms that measure their share in the tera- or petabytes, so I don't have a hard time finding anything, really.

As for security, I've never heard of any issues or had any myself. DC++ is front-loaded on effort, so most people, including the lawyers, give it a miss and the rooms will kick out and ban anyone trying to get malware in there.

There's a megathread with all the info you could ever want om the piracy reddit

This is not a bad place to start. These days, there are a lot of streaming sites that are free, but not all of them are terribly reliable. I recommend using a VPN and an adblocker.

Yep, was gonna recommend the same. I stream, I do not use a VPN (maybe I should? I'm less worried because it's just streaming, not downloading, but maybe I should be).

Well, the OP mentioned torrenting which is why I recommended a VPN. For streaming only, it's probably okay? I don't really know, tbh.

Yeah, you want to get a VPN for those sites.

Oh wow, thanks. I'm not on reddit so I didn't even occur to me to check there!

Reddit can be annoying as hell at times, but it can also be a great repository of information.
