Those people definitely have current racist/homophobic/sexist thoughts or beliefs and they're acting on them and completely unaware of it because they think they can't possible have them. I waffle on who is worse, those guys or out-and-out bigots.

That's my kneejerk reaction but I try to keep an open mind and take others at their word about their lived experience. But it's definitely an outlier that people would never have any sexist/racist/homophobic/etc thoughts. There are so many inherent bias in our society that it seems almost impossible to have grown up aware of all of them.

That reminds me of the story of some Rabbis that went to a museum, I think the Museum of Tolerance, and to get in you have to choose which door to go through, Prejudiced or Unprejudiced. They banged and banged and banged on the Unprejudiced door to try to get in. But there's just a wall behind the Unprejudiced "door" because such a person does not exist.

Yeah, I suspect they don't realize how deep these things can go. It's okay to have a shitty thought, as long as you later realize it was a shitty thought (which may take some unpacking for months, maybe years) and try really hard not to have that thought again (or at least beat it away until it doesn't come back).
