Re: Past threads you think about now and then

Yeah, I remember that thread. I was on the side of the shocked and appalled though. Not because of people not being able to grow and change, but because a number of these people were not just having a misguided take, or negative thought. But because at least one of them openly admitted to constantly and consistently using the N word when thinking about black people, even though they'd never say it outloud and knew it was wrong.
That isn't a mistake you grow past, even if you're raised with only those words in your ears, it's been too long for you too keep using them, no matter how old you are. Being raised with those words means you're raised with the intention behind them. To not fight against that ingrained bigotry the moment you know that it's wrong means you're living being alright with those meanings.

I'm not going to go and say anyone who had a bigoted thought or opinion is constantly projecting hate and disgust as a trait of who they are, that would be stupid. After all, as the famous Avenue Q song goes, "Everyone is a little bit racist".
No, people can grow and learn and can adapt to a different way of being from the people who raised them. People can change. But for the people who admitted to currently having those thoughts even if they denied having those opinions, I question, because those go hand in hand.
