Wow, you really picked the guy who has been openly, aggressively racist in word and deed since at least the last 40 years for this one, huh? The guy who was still trying to prove that Obama was a stealth African who couldn’t be the real president when he announced his run? No one is born self-aware, but also there’s Wikipedia.

nayrt, but for the record, I didn't know much about Trump until he won the 2016 nomination. He was just some rich guy from NYC with a tower, a shitty combover and a reality TV show. I had no reason to care until that point in time.

Obviously, people from New York knew what a piece of shit he was, so nothing surprised them. I'm sure it was infuriating to watch the rest of the country fall for the bullshit he spewed.

As for me, the more I learned about him, the less I liked about him. Having grown up in a narcissistic household, I could see he was waving all the red flags. There are so many people I will never forgive for casting their vote for him more than once.

As for those who wished to give him a chance in 2016, you can't just assume that everybody knew or "should have" known. Of course Wikipedia exists, but the average American doesn't research their candidates, otherwise they wouldn't vote against their self-interests again and again. (Also, America has a racism and misogyny problem it doesn't want to admit to, but that's for another discussion.)

If you’re not going to do the bare minimum of reading a Wikipedia article and you’re going to ignore all the people saying that the guy is bad news here are the receipts, and you’re going to ignore that he was incredibly racist to the previous president for 8 years ahead of his nomination to the point that it was a meme at the point, then just admit that you had no interest in whether or not the guy was a rapist and a racist because you thought he was funny. But if you’re like prev who ignored the extremely easily available information that people from all walks of life were pushing at them and also wants to play the victim because “everyone who says they already knew he was terrible is just gloating,” then you can fuck all the way off.

Hey anon, here's a suggestion.

Maybe actually listen to what people are actually telling you before going off on some mouth-frothing rant about something they didn't even say.

Same here. I was vaguely aware of him before he ran for president, but I knew almost nothing specific about him. Like you said, I knew he was rich and had a reality TV show and I think he was famous for saying YOU'RE FIRED! on it? That was quite literally the full extent of what I knew.

Once he won the nomination, I figured he was just a clown and it wouldn't go anywhere. More fool me, I guess.

Eventually it started to become clear that he's well beyond just a clown conman, and I voted against him, but for sure I didn't realize early on in that election cycle how vile he was.

AYRT
Thanks for being the example I was speaking of.

I chose Trump specifically because pre-2016, I wrote him off as an attention seeking asshole who was using politics to keep up his celebrity. Everything he did was just for attention, but when his campaign began to gain momentum and more and more really dark and serious accusations and stories came out did I realize that I'd been naive to think he was simply an opportunist. I should have seen that yes, he is an opportunist, but he is an actively hateful man who is ten toes in with upholding the status quo. He's not just saying shit to get all eyes on him.

I hate telling people about my experiences like this, because I tell it to try to appeal to people to not brush off everyone as useless and stupid. But most times, people use my words and experiences to compare to themselves and pat themselves on the back for being better than me.
Yet these people wonder why there is mistrust and a lack of people being smart like them.

People might not want to join the wokey left if all they get is woke-scolded and be reminded who the real progressives are.

I don't believe that the entrance fee to new places is a humiliation ritual, which I think is something a lot of angry people are wanting right now. To prove you're no longer a mindless idiot, tell us all your former idiot beliefs and we'll shame and mock you before we decide if you're even allowed in.
No room for grace or to hear how those who grew out of their ignorance has changed or done better. Just gotta ensure we're better than them by loudly declaring how DUMB and WRONG they are to us, those of us who have never thought wrong and will never be wrong.

And before anyone comes in with a bad faith gotcha of "So we're just going to let MAGA folks get away with their racism because they didn't know better?"
No, that's not what I said nor what I'm arguing for.
What I'm saying is, no human is perfect and it would do well to remember that because some people forget that those they judge and they themselves are human.
And all this dick measuring is distracting us from doing the work needed (though tbf seeing less in-fighting these past couple weeks).

[FTR I consider myself progressive, am queer and a WOC; grew up in majority white towns and no one in my life is particularly active or interested in politics or social history, don't have a big social network.
I spoke openly and often that Trump was unfit to be president. I understood that if he became president his administration would do all sorts of racist and sexist shit, but I was putting the blame on the people around Trump, thinking he was just a dumb prop. In reality, he's more than a prop. There are more ways Trump gained power than just he found racists to vote for him, that's why when he started his second term I understood it's more than just having the right opinions that need to be done to fight fascism]

I LOVE your comments so much. You are so right about this. There is so much in-fighting and shaming on the left, it's incredibly frustrating. I just don't get why people have this urge to say HEY YOU! YOU WERE FUCKING STUPID, AND YOU WERE WRONG! AND REALLY DUMB! AND YOU FUCKED UP BECAUSE YOU'RE STUPID AND YOU WERE WRONG. Especially when they say it in response to a comment like yours; it's not like you voted for him in 2016 and then saw how shitty he was. You just didn't realize AT FIRST that he wasn't just a clown. I was the same way, thought he was an idiot and kind of scammy but it took awhile to realize how bad he truly is.
