What makes something count as a "fandom" to you?

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Is it enough for something to have fans?
Have fans that talk to each other about the thing?
Have communities dedicated to that thing?
Fans that create works based on the thing?
Etc

As I commented in the thread for #3, for me, being in a fandom is about three things:
1. Intent – deliberately setting out to share your experiences with other fans; being part of a fan collective
2. Attachment – forming some emotional connection to that something beyond just the initial enjoyment of consuming it
3. Action – engaging with that something outside the initial watching/listening/reading/playing/buying of that something in any way

I like your definition, it makes sense in an analytic way. Things like the cups is something where, without context, wouldn't appear to have a fandom, but then you find out people are doing what would be considered fandomy things with them, and that's when it tips over into a fandom. Decorating, collecting/displaying, hell even just having squee-laden chats about the thing with other people who like the thing is a fannish activity. I'd guess the fine line between a hobby existing on its own and having a hobby-fandom is Intent more than Action.

The core of the word fan is from fanatic.

So if you're a fanatic about something and you share that with others, it's a fandom.

That's it to me. 100 million people watching Law and Order isn't fandom, they're being #Normal. 10 people swapping their favorite screen shots of Olivia Benson - fandom.

It's about a level of investment (fanatic) and community (-dom)

(So yes, Stanley Cup facebook groups are 100% fandom. fite me.)

Denver, Colorado

Does anyone here live in Denver or has traveled to it often? My sister and I are thinking of taking a 4 day vacation there. Right now, we are looking at staying in The Maven on the Dairy Block.

As a warning, if you're not from a comparatively high up location, you'll might be spending 1 or 2 days out of that 4 getting over altitude sickness

I don't know about that exact spot but the city area of Denver is very walkable. walkways everywhere and a very well connected public transportation system between buses and trains its very easy to use public transport to get places within the city area. My bro and I travel up to Denver whenever we can go to conventions. I'm a non-driver and I LOVE it when I visit there. .

Oh, nice, downtown near Coors Field. There’s a free shuttle that runs up and down 16th Street to get you from place to place within downtown. Also 16th is a pedestrian mall. Other than the shuttles, there is no vehicular traffic. There are a lot of fantastic restaurants in downtown. I hope you and your sister have fun in Denver!

Please report back on what you thought of The Maven if you remember to! Recently stayed in Denver and I'd considered staying at The Maven but chose elsewhere. If I’m not mistaken, this is located at McGregor Square and it's literally across the street from Coors Field. Super close to Commons Park (highly recommend taking a walk around that area, a lot to do and see). Downtown Denver is incredibly easy to walk and offers a lot of public transportation. If you want to see stuff outside the city, the light rail is really close by at Union Station (also fun to visit). You can take a ride to the airport or ride up north and see the metro areas.

I recommend visiting the Denver Art Museum and the Denver Public Library! They're close by and offer plenty for one to see and walk through. The Denver Event Center is close by as well, always have something going on. There are a lot of concert halls and opera houses in Denver too, and they often have events going on.

IIRC there's the Molly Brown house if you're into Titanic/badass women in history. And I think the Denver Botanical Garden is nearby (if you're going to visit closer to spring/summer).

The Denver area has a lot to offer in terms of things to do, and downtown area is so walkable!

I live too close to Denver to have opinions on hotels but I super recommend Meow Wolf, concerts at Red Rocks, and getting up into the mountains.

Re: Altitude sickness - It probably won't be a huge deal unless you get wasted and try to run up the Incline. Or have been sensitive in the past. Or go further into the mountains. In general: drink lots of water, moisturize (including lip balm), wear sunscreen even if there are clouds or snow, go easy on alcohol (it'll hit harder), and listen to your body.

Brandon and Tyler

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Has anyone met one who doesn't suck? I saw a Brandon being intelligent and not a dick in the comments of a post once, and it honestly shocked me.

Fuck Discord

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sharing ID or a video for some age verification bullshit they plan to roll out in March. Did they already forget the breach a few months back?

I hope this backfires on them spectacularly.

Re: Fuck Discord

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly can't see how it won't backfire. So many people aren't gonna want to go along with it, for good reason, and are gonna pitch a fit, start actively looking for an alternative, or both.

It's already generating bad PR as I can tell, and I'm sure that's gonna intensify as the month goes on.

Re: Fuck Discord

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Seconded. I will be cancelling my Nitro subscription if they go through with that. Fuck them.

I hadn’t heard about this! Off to google because my game guild does everything on Discord. Figures, I’ve had it for years without ever using it until last month. Ugh.

Figure skating gripe

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 02:40 am (UTC)(link)

This is probably gonna seem petty, but whatever: I feel like Mrazkova and Mrazek should have had points deducted from their rhythm dance for starting their medley with an AI-generated song. Not even really because it's AI, but because it's not a '90s song, which was the assignment. The fact that it was approximating AC/DC doesn't change the fact that it wasn't actually AC/DC.

And yes, it was followed by a remix of 'Thunderstruck,' and that's fine. But what's the point of having a music theme if people can flout it? Hold them to it!

Re: Figure skating gripe

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Isn’t it because the licensing is nearly impossible for the skaters to get permission? I don’t mean just AC/DC but pretty much any recording artist.
