We humans tend to lose all logic when things hit close to home.

I think of Molly as a kind of Mrs. Bennett. Well-intentioned but cringe. She knew Hermione was A Big Deal, and she wanted that for her son. Like Mrs. Bennett, the moment a speck of doubt entered the picture, she was eager to blame the supposedly offending party as a misguided attempt to protect her son.
