Yeah, I mostly prefer the Unsolved Mysteries end because it tends to focus more on investigation (and how investigations fail) than sensationalism and scare tactics. And of course there's no option to fetishize the perpetrator if there isn't one. Though of course there's still plenty of bad stuff on that end too..

But one thing I don't see many people point out about true crime which is a huge part of what sometimes draws me to binge it is that it's one of the few places in our society where we can actually hear stories about just ordinary people going about their ordinary lives that aren't all puffed up about how famous and special and talented they are. Yeah, they usually end in the ordinary person having the worst day of their (possibly very short life) but even that's part of why it's an antidote to all the slick celebrity influencer stuff.
