The fact that so many of NG's co-collaborators were legitimately surprised by the revelations means that some people are really good at hiding who they are around their friends. Maybe one or two things in his books were iffy, but I have plenty of friends who like writing edgy/angsty stuff in fiction that don't like it IRL.

As a late teen my favourite book was edgy book with necrophilia and underage sex. Also there were some undead people, abused girl committing suicide and killing her bullies after. This writer was just kind of a guy to write for shock value and some parody. And I have found it amusing at that age. No, I don't and didn't find any of that good IRL. I just a have a great tolerance to weird and icky horror, that is all. (Also apparently no one knows if the author is real. He was extremely popular on a forum I was spending my time at that time.)
