Honestly, hard disagree. Dev Patel has such a wonderful charm and wholesome energy, even when he's playing kind of a douchebag (see: Green Knight). Heathcliff needs someone who can bring a straight-up skin-crawling vibe of 'you Cannot Trust This Guy, he is willing to do Monstrous Shit'.

in my more uncharitable moments, all the clamoring for dev patel heathcliff is giving 'i don't want to be racist but I only know one A-list brown actor that I think is hot enough to be a romantic lead'

Yeah, even when Dev Patel is playing a not great guy, you want to trust him. Though, that said, it now makes me want to see him do a real villain! Maybe play a politician.
