I’d never even heard of videos like this until about a week ago. Wannabe influencers have been flooding allergy spaces (mainly through bots but not always) and spamming the hell out of everyone with links to their recipes. It’s annoying as hell but also incredibly dangerous because the recipes aren’t allergy safe. It now takes an enormous effort to moderate those spaces and unfortunately when the bullshit slips through those posts gain the most attention. Meanwhile, Gina’s awesome clone of First Watch Lemon Quinoa Risotto or Dave’s classic waffles that actually taste like classic waffles but won’t kill any of us all get lost in the void.

I think part of what annoys me is the links aren’t even to their videos. They link to their blog and then the link to the video is hidden there and many times the recipe isn’t even in the video, it’s just a 30 second clip of stock footage of ingredients laid out and maybe some shots of food cooking. It’s so stupid and I can’t imagine anyone actually believing it’s worth the trouble.

I don't really like sourcing recipes from videos anyway, but if a content creator refuses to list all the ingredients and the amounts in the video, and insists you jump through an extra hoop for it (Ex: "Leave a comment and I'll send you the link!"), you and your channel are dead to me. I doubt I'm missing out on much, though.

This is a constant source of disagreement in my household because my partner is into TikTok and I don't do video-based fandom at all. So she'll find a cool recipe but she can only get the recipe to me with multiple screenshots, and there's often something missing (usually in the method, not the ingredients) that is only in the video, and I get cranky about it, and she has to watch the video multiple times to try to find the actual details. So we don't even go as far as "comment for recipe" and it's still contentious!

TikTok is such an awful place to get recipes. Even if it's not some heavily (and misleadingly) edited "viral" BS, there's no way in hell the recipe is sooooo unique that you can't find its equivalent somewhere else with all the ingredients listed properly, plus instructions.

TikTok is such an awful place <---just stop there.

LOL, yeah, I typed that and thought, "I could stop there..."

You probably could have stopped after the sixth word.

I mean... why even?
It clearly takes a lot more effort to screenshot whatever they're sharing over searching for the original recipe that person based their video on.

I don't have a particularly strong opinions because most times I can go either way.

Most days, I'm looking for a recipe for a strong guiding hand in helping me create a meal I want to eat, but I don't need to know exactly what the ingredients list is or how long to do what.

When I'm tackling a more serious dish in which I've little to no experience with, then I'd want easy access to a recipe and ingredients list. But there I'd go finding a recipe I can read and look at the printed directions over trying to get screenshots via the video though. But that's just me.

That's just a waste of everyones time. It's always been cookbooks for me!
