Things that ought to be tagged...

(Anonymous) 2026-02-22 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Inspired by the age regression secret ...

Have experienced this in a few fandoms where some fanon blows up to the point that people just stop tagging it since it's somehow become "expected".

One corner of fandom randomly decided that weight-gain and feeder-kink was just par for the course for a particular pairing and zomg, the back-buttoning I did (and, alas, those seeking it who did not find it!). Another fandom decided collectively that there'd been abuse in a character's backstory (no hint of this in canon!) and oh, the untagged noncon flashback scenes...

What "that should've been tagged" trends have y'all run into?

Don't know if this is still the case, but untagged alpha/omega was showing up in the bdsm tags for the longest time in some fandoms. Also, god forbid you were into bondage and not into humiliation kink or over-the-top Dom/sub dynamics.

liking bondage but not S&M, dom/sub, or anything else is truly a cursed sitation.

DA
OMG SAME
I love bondage and *cough* gang bang, but everything else is only for couple of pairings. It is such a curse

I ran into an author who didn't believe in tagging once. Had really extreme kinks not tagged at all. This was before AO3. From what I remember from the fic I started reading of theirs, it involved incest, bloody and violent stuff during sex, and a bunch of other stuff. And no mention of any of it in tags or summery. Author seemed to take delight in the author note at the end explaining they didn't believe in tagging and "don't like, don't read." Except it was at the end of the thing.

The most common one I always come across is improperly tagging the fandom itself. Is it movie, musical, TV, game, comic, era?? All fandom is like "did not chose to use archive warnings" but don't tag The Flash (comics) with The Flash (TV) when writing a Justice League fic based on the movie characters.

Modern AU was another one in a few fandoms. I was so mad because they tied it with the wrong canon tag too at times. So annoying.

There was also a trend for characters (male, in relatively recent historical settings) wearing make-up? Like they got dolled up in mascara and lipstick? The characters very much did not wear makeup, but obviously the actors did, and it was just a really weird thing to come across. I have no idea what they were thinking.

There are so many. I've come across a lot of what you've mentioned too. And while a lot of them don't /need/ tags if they simply exist and aren't really a thing, it's still strange.

Oh man yes to this. I love the adaptions of Tolkien, but I tend to mostly read book fics. But sometimes I'm in the mood for movie or tv fics. Either way, though, it is annoying when they aren't properly tagged.

Sometimes I know it's just because an author is new and doesn't know how to tag properly... but there are also those who seem to do it intentionally, and I'm always so annoyed by it.

I don't read a lot of Tolkien fics, but with every adaption and offshoot, I can't even imagine the mess of tags between Books, 1st Movies, Reboots, Merged, and any and all that falls in between. It must be such a headache.
I know it's not that simple, but I really wish people would just tag a singular canon. It'd make things so much easier.

In some corners of fandom ABO is treated as any M/M fic and not specifically tagged and I hate it

I don't understand why PIV sex isn't tagged more often. I just don't want to see it, it's not appealing to me and can even upset me on a bad day. Not all M/F couples do it, not all trans!M/M or trans!F/F couples do it due to dysphoria/hormones/lack of interest, so I don't understand why this is treated like something humanity universally enjoys or the only way to have sex.

Humiliation/degradation. I love a LOT of kink stuff. I do NOT love degradation, and while I'm willing to read kinks that I'm not into if I genuinely believe The Character is, SO many people seem to think if things are going to involve kink, then it is necessary that the sub be called a slut. And none of the pairings that I read fic about does it work for me to have that happen.

Some pairings, I just don't think that's something the character taking the Dominant role would say. Sometimes because referring to the sub in question that way comes off as more silly than anything. In one instance because it would be genuinely HURTFUL and should have stopped the scene short.

Like, sure, I frequently believe in 'under what circumstances would he say that?' over 'he would not say that', but it never feels like work has been put into making it feel like these characters would go for that, it just feels kind of rote?

And, in one fandom, there was someone who had untagged noncon between the ship they were writing about. Someone else did warn me before I clicked on it-- it was a big enough fandom that there were plenty of choices-- that I might not enjoy seeing a violent sexual assault happen between the two, so I *did* get a warning, but I did not get it from the author's tags.
