Ships you stopped loving?

[personal profile] philstar22 2026-02-25 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Are there any ships you fell out of love with? What made you change?

Are there any that you disliked at first but came to enjoy?

Once Upon a Time

I fell out of love with Rumpelstiltskin and Belle in Once Upon a Time.

I liked the two characters and their version of the beauty-and-the-beast dynamic. But then Rumple kept going on this redemption-corruption carousel and Belle got sidelined. (Eventually there was some awful mystical pregnancy coma?) Seeing them become shades of their former selves soured me on the whole thing.

Oh god yes. The carousel of Rumple. That show. At least with some of the redemption arcs, they stuck. With him, he kept going back to evil and then just instantly forgiven the moment he decided to try to be good again. And it was ultimately always about himself and maybe sometimes about her and his son. He never actually wanted to be good for the right reasons. He was always selfish right to the end.

You actually made me realize that in most other stories I get into, that kind of character might be allowed to find some half-way point, some way of being a periodic ally to the heroes without going for a full redemption. But since OUaT is fundamentally a fairytale-based show, that’s not a stable option the way it is in the morally grayer world of a crime or espionage story.

My first time watching House I massively shipped him with Cuddy. The show totally ruined my enjoyment of the ship, though. Same things happened with Booth/Bones on Bones, though I never shipped that quite as strongly.

My first Doctor Who run I shipped Doctor/Donna. I ended up falling out of love with the ship and realized I didn't really want to ship the Doctor with normal humans at all.

I shipped Clint/Natasha in the MCU for a while until I just grew bored with the ship. Don't hate it, just don't really ship it anymore.

On the other side, I didn't hate Doctor/Master, but I didn't fall in love with the ship until Missy and then watching some Old Who. I still ship other versions of it much more strongly than I do 10/Master.

the House/Cuddy relationship was one of many things that they screwed up bigtime in the later seasons.

So annoying when canon screws up a ship that could have worked. Sometimes I still ship the fanon version, but sometimes like with these two my enjoyment of the ship at all is totally destroyed.

Yeah, Doctor/Master didn’t really click for me until Missy. She had a more playful antagonism with the Doctor that was different from Simm!Master’s more straightforward hatred and resentment.

I ought to go watch some older Master stories. I’ve only ever dipped into the older series sort of at random and I don’t think I’ve seen any stories with previous incarnations of the Master.

Old Doctor and Master is great. While 12/Missy is my favorite, 3/Master is a very close second. 3 became my favorite Old Who Doctor in large part because of his interactions with the original Master.

DA - 3/Master is the GOAT! I also loved 5/Master.

Oooo. Yes. 5/Master is great too. Honestly every other version of the Doctor/Master ship beats out 10/Master for me. I didn't even love the Simms!Master until his appearance with 12 and Missy. And yes, I totally ship all three together. And Missy/Master.

Hmm. Most ships I kind of cool down on then will have like a month where I decide to read them for a while. Or if I see a particularly good fic summary, I'll read it.

The only one I can think of really growing to not enjoy is Cecil/Carlos from Welcome to Nigthvale and that is because I great to dislike the show.

I think one I was meh on but a really good fic change my mind was Sanji/Luffy. Same with Jon/Sansa.

I loved shipping Nancy Wheeler and Steven Harrington from Stranger Things.

After Season 5, though, it's glaringly obvious to me now that Stancy's biggest flaw is that Steve's not the one who can get pregnant. Since he wants six nuggets, he should be the one to carry and birth them (and he would, too, if he could.)

Problems only fanfiction can fix, am I right?

Or just old fashioned mpreg if you’re not into dog sex.

I loved Remus/Tonks when I was in the Harry Potter fandom way back when. Then they became canon and it got weird.

Oh man yes. I didn't fully stop shipping until I left the fandom. But I did not like how they became canon. Their storyline was stupid on many counts.

Honestly, I didn't even like how parent ships like James/Lily and Molly/Arthur were written. Rowling just really couldn't write romance at all.

I did not like James/Lily as written either. Could have been done so much better but was not a fan of what we were given at all.

I was obsessed with Mulder/Scully back in the day, but did a hard swerve to NoRoMo when they actually started to become canon. And I suddenly realized Mulder is a broken manbaby who just wants Scuwwy to be his mommy.

Up through the first half of A Storm of Swords, I was so excited for Sansa/Tyrion. Big pile of tropes I cannot resist:
*Arranged political marriage between two families that hate each other? Check!
*Bride is conventionally pretty and groom is considered ugly? Check and check!
*Groom doesn't consummate marriage because he knows bride is too young and doesn't want him? Check!

I was thrilled when Sansa got spirited away by Littlefinger, because that fed into another trope I love: Arranged marriage couple gets separated by fate for a few years, then reunited again after the bride is comfortably an adult. And they're still legally married! They develop a new appreciation for each other and decide to give it a go.

So that all went down the toilet when Tyrion straight up murdered Shae. I know I could find fix-it fic if I tried, but I lost all my enthusiasm for ASOIAF. But they could have been the Westerosi power couple, damn it.

Beautiful job articulating all of the things that got me excited about Sansa/Tyrion

Around twenty years ago I was into sonadow. I still have fic for it up on my ffnet profile (purely because I forgot the password and no longer have access to the email). Being an old hat now and new fans (esp fans that came in from the movies) thinking Shadow is his only rival when Knuckles and Jet are *right there* is exhausting.
