It's OK, babe. Though my favourite band aren't outward with it, they've done enough dodgy stuff (abusing & cheating on ex-girlfriends, making "humorous' TikToks using abuse victims testimony, invalidating male victims because "he seemed fine around their abuser," talking out of their asses about people with mental illness) that though I still like their music, I don't think I would want to have them in my life personally.

I had an IRL breakdown when a musician I loved SA'd someone. He also had secret blog where he confessed to assaulting a drunk man and being interested in other illegal things that I discovered by complete accident. He was an indie-ish artist too, so we were mutuals for awhile too despite not being close or friends. After that I chose to not have parasocial heroes anymore. I listen to music for the sound and lyrics, not the people who make it. I can enjoy someone's public persona and their work, and if they're nice that's a bonus point, but nothing more.

I felt similarly with Jewel and her MAHA bullshit. Didn't see it coming; she seemed okay in interviews even five or so years ago. But what I didn't know is that she'd gotten into the antivaxxer movement, and well, the pipeline to the alt right is real. (Some might say "she also turned country so that was a clue" but I don't automatically assume politics from genre.) I hoped she would learn her lesson after the backlash she received after performing at Inauguration Day for Ser Brain Worm, but apparently she showed up to Bezos' wedding so I guess she decided her "north star" was in hell indefinitely.

I've got her albums in a bag somewhere, just debating whether I want to pawn/trade them in somewhere or just toss them in the garbage.

I was very into Marilyn Manson as a teenager and I always regarded the fascist imagery as something in the tradition of Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

Finding out that not only was he genuinely into some Nazi shit, but also an incredibly abusive partner… it definitely depressed me for a while. I think it took years before I listened to the music again.

I understand this is probably related to AO3, but on my side of the fandom (Tiktok and Instagram. I don't consume fic), it is LARGELY Lyonel/Dunk. I have seen so, so many shippy edits of Lyonel and Dunk.

I wish more fans were open to admitting that they want heavily moderated, fans-only, positivity-only, dissenters-are-banned spaces for their faves, ships, idols, whatever. There's nothing wrong with such clearly delineated spaces and honestly I think that would solve a lot of problems.

But whenever it's suggested, so many of them seem to look down on those spaces, refuse to look for them, and won't admit that's what they want out of fandom, even if they complain about 'haters' and 'antis' existing around them 24/7. Like they want that kind of space, but only unofficially, because... idk?

Is it some kind of misplaced pride?
