I think you hit the nail on the head. Shipping as activism had always struck me as dubious at best.

This Tumblr post pretty much perfectly puts the issue with heckling people over the percieved progressiveness, or lack thereof, of their ships.

Not to mention increasing, needless hostility towards fans who ship het. A significant chunk of some fandoms are children just having fun. Like...do we really want that to be a kid's first experience with us?!

Shipping is not activism by freedom-of-fanfic
