I always just assumed it was a well planned coup, Iroh was going to lean against the war after losing his kid and obviously the greedy warmongering officials wouldn't want that. Like I'm sure there was more of a backlash, but as none of the main characters were a part of it, we don't see it.

Besides Ursa murdering the firelord so the second son could take over would be brushed under the rug. I'm sure most of the world, even the fire nation, wouldn't know even a tenth of what actually happened. Propaganda doing it's work.

Yes, plus Ozai was shown to be a poor ruler *specifically* because he wasn't a dynastic thinker - his power was for himself alone. If there'd been any rebellion against him it would have centered on Iroh, who was depressed and unofficially exiled, or Zuko, who was considered weak, publicly beaten down, and officially exiled.

Ozai scarred and exiled his heir for minor dissent. When his new heir was careful to do everything perfectly, he cast aside her plans and goals to call himself the Phoenix King. Instead of conquering and ruling the Earth Kingdom - the main food supply - he tried to devastate it. I don't think this is a guy who inspired loyalty among the competent. I think the return of Iroh and Zuko might inspire some power games but everyone who was halfway competent is hugely relieved that both Ozai and Azula are out of the picture.
