One of the weirdest things about AtLA is that over the course of TWO YEARS the son of the crown prince of the Fire Nation gets KIA, the Crown Prince gets knocked out of the line of succession just as the Fire Lord dies and the new Fire Lord's wife mysteriously disappears, and then the new Crown Prince is publicly mutilated and banished, and the closest thing we see to any sort of unrest in the Fire Kingdom three years later is Jeong Jeong. Oof.

I always just assumed it was a well planned coup, Iroh was going to lean against the war after losing his kid and obviously the greedy warmongering officials wouldn't want that. Like I'm sure there was more of a backlash, but as none of the main characters were a part of it, we don't see it.

Besides Ursa murdering the firelord so the second son could take over would be brushed under the rug. I'm sure most of the world, even the fire nation, wouldn't know even a tenth of what actually happened. Propaganda doing it's work.

Yes, plus Ozai was shown to be a poor ruler *specifically* because he wasn't a dynastic thinker - his power was for himself alone. If there'd been any rebellion against him it would have centered on Iroh, who was depressed and unofficially exiled, or Zuko, who was considered weak, publicly beaten down, and officially exiled.

Ozai scarred and exiled his heir for minor dissent. When his new heir was careful to do everything perfectly, he cast aside her plans and goals to call himself the Phoenix King. Instead of conquering and ruling the Earth Kingdom - the main food supply - he tried to devastate it. I don't think this is a guy who inspired loyalty among the competent. I think the return of Iroh and Zuko might inspire some power games but everyone who was halfway competent is hugely relieved that both Ozai and Azula are out of the picture.

tell me you don't know anything about Chinese history without telling me...

one of the GOOD things about ATLA is how the writers, in spite of their own cultural background, did their research. it's kind of an incredible combo of storytelling conventions (set up a weird perfect storm and then subvert it) and actual history (see: Chinese dynastic history holy shit). Like, kudos, for real.

Did you somehow leave your Chinese history lessons believing that dynasties came and went without any rebellions or political dissent? Weird.

No?? the fuck is this comment?? Dynasties rising and falling over dissent and rebellion is my point, ATLA is on point and not some kind of anomaly.

But... the secret says that there is barely ANY unrest or rebellion over the changing dynasty. So your ~point~ makes no sense if it was about that.
