OP, are you me? I've angsted a lot about how little smut there is in my current fandom. (I was used to much bigger fandoms in the past like Doctor Who and Harry Potter where you couldn't swing the proverbial feline without hitting a bunch of smut fic.) I was really nervous posting the first one that I did to AO3 because there was, I think, perhaps not literally just one, but a count-on-one-hand number already there. I'm no longer the only one, as someone else has popped up in the past year or two writing mature/explicit stuff mostly featuring a different main character than I do, but it's still not very common and I get all those same feelings about "am I doing this wrong? are people annoyed and disgusted by me and avoiding me in other places like Tumblr because of it?" that you describe.
