So a trailer for the new Pride and Prejudice Netflix adaptation has dropped and... ehhh. I want to give this a chance even if it's Netflix, but Elizabeth Bennet sitting on a rooftop (??) like an emo girl, a lot of really drab, depressing colors and close-up hand shots (a shout out to the 2005 adaptation, minus the beautiful cinematography?) and then Mr. Darcy rolls up on horse back looking like Simon Pegg in a wig. This might not be good, you guys. :(

I'm not feeling too encouraged either, but I am trying really hard to withhold judgement until we see more. But....yeah.

Wow, that is really not a flattering photo of Jack Lowden. I can’t decide how much is the styling and how much is the particularly sour expression he’s making.

Not being much of an Austen fan myself, he’s the main reason I might have considered watching, but I’m not drawn to it from that trailer either.

Always interested in The Discourse around adaptations, though.

I'm a huge fan of the book, but there's no way I'm going to watch this show. It reminds me of being a Terry Pratchett fan and seeing the Watch TV show come out.

WHY

(Anonymous) 2026-03-03 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
do they keep re-adapting and remaking things that have already been done. There are already two versions of Pride and Prejudice. Can't we have some NEW stories (or adaptations of things that haven't already been adapted)?

There are way more than two, even! And I was just making this argument to my mom last night (not about this fandom but something similar). Every time a threadbare classic gets a new adaptation it's at the cost of not giving something new and interesting a chance.

P&P is a threadbare classic?
??

I'd love a modern take on Northanger Abbey, tbh

Don't worry, pretty soon AI is going to churn out some barely Wish-quality slop that we can pay a monthly fee to access so we won't have to worry about specific adaptations!

Of course I'm joking, but I would not be surprised if that happened.

Right? There are even other things by the same author that haven't been adapted, or at least not more than once. Why do they keep going back to this one?

/shrug I hear you, but it's Austen's most well known work and the last adaptation was over two decades ago. P&P is always going to undergo new remakes.

Because the business of entertainment media is business? They like to minimize risk and maximize profit.

Why do they keep remaking Batman, Sherlock Holmes, Frankenstein, Dracula, Little Women, Superman? Why are there so many sequels, prequels, sidequels? Why are there so many spin-offs and reboots? Probably a few reasons - familiarity can be comforting, built-in audience, marketing can be easier, etc.

I was surprised by how gloomy and moody the trailer was. It honestly looked more like Wuthering Heights than the upcoming adaptation does, which is funny. Seems like an odd choice for one of Austen's wittiest novels.

I'm not a purist. There are a few stories I love so much that I'll watch any adaptation or reinterpretation. P&P is one of them. So I guess I'm the target market.

I'm not sure, "will take anything" is a good marketing technique... but hey, I'm also not Britsh.

I guess we'll see once viewership numbers roll in.

"Wuthering Heights" has done well, which makes me happy on multiple levels.

Oh I didn't know that, but I'm glad. I'm generally not a fan of the sisters works, but it's nice to know how impactful their writing still is.
