My parents threatened to take away my books for much the same reason. I've always been a bookworm, and as a kid I wasn't very social. They couldn't punish me by refusing permission for me to go out because I didn't go out, LOL. Taking away my books and reading privileges was the only thing they could think of that might actually hurt me, because books were my escapism from a crappy home life.
