I think there are some people who have a tendency to be ahead of the zeitgeist and have the taste to say "I like that" before others have access to it. But also majority of the times it's anecdotal. One may feel like a trend setter/taste maker, but most times it's a mix of time, place, luck, and coincidence. No one's special, we just find ways to feel it.
