Re: Personal question: do you have a good relationship with your parents?

I love my parents. I had a wonderful childhood. But they've voted for Trump since 2016 and I've stopped caring if it's stupidity or cruelty. Every visit I have to keep track of my keys/glasses/water bottle in case I need to walk out. I try to have hope, but I don't like them very much right now.

That sucks. I'm so sorry. It's hard when someone you care about falls for the damn cult or at least a cult-like movement.

My condolences. A lot of families have been torn up by politics this way. I've had a little of that in my extended family and it's ugly. You thought you knew someone, or you believed that even though they were a bit more conservative than you that they still had a good heart or that they meant well. Nope. The line between stupidity and malice is very blurry these days.

DA

It's honestly so hard to reconcile sometimes. I'm really lucky in that my immediate family are NOT fans of him, but like. Coworkers and stuff who I like and respect, and then I find out they're hardcore Trumpers, and I'm just BAFFLED. Like you're a decent person and you're not stupid, why the fuck are you buying the utter bullshit this man is peddling??? It confuses me so hard. I just can't wrap my mind around it. Like, my parents aren't exactly the most liberal people out there, but even they can see - and have always seen, since 2016 - that this man is a con artist who is full of shit.

Exactly. There's something about Trump that really appeals to them on a deep level, so much so that they're willing to overlook all the obvious atrocities and crimes he's committed. I'm not sure it's worthwhile to figure out what that is, because the answer is probably something awful since there's nothing redeeming about the man.

That, combined with a generous dose of stupidity.
