I get that the internet was - and still is - a refuge for misfits and nerds. But I think maybe due to that, parts of fandom culture enables and even encourages bullying victims to gather together and dwell on things that happened years and years ago and never get over it in a very unhealthy way.

These days I see much more gleeful bullying in the present than dwelling on bullying in the past.

And then use it to bully other people too.

I agree, but I live in a small town (I did not grow up here) and see exactly the same dynamic in real life. Friend groups that are now in their 60s still dwelling on that one thing that happened when they were teenagers. Grown adults who still snub each other and make their families do the same, sometimes for a few generations in a row. I think that any kind of long-lasting, inward looking group can perpetuate shitty behaviours and nerd internet is no different.

There's also always the same "things changed and I don't like it" mentality, which is fine if it's just missing things, but can become self-defeating and even harmful.

Any specific (or general) examples, OP?

can't speak for OP but an easy one is any group that feels oppressed by 'normies' existing in their space

I was bullied myself but seeing people unironically complain about "normies" in fandom makes me almost want to find a locker to stuff them in.

Haven't heard this one, but I could probably see it if supposed 'normies' started leaning hard into being antis or something. You know, the type of folks who don't understand fandom can get shamelessly freaky and browbeat folks with the purity bullshit just for playing in their sandboxes.

I do miss the fact that these spaces aren't as secret as they used to be, but I wouldn't call that the same as feeling oppressed. It's not like they're stopping me from participating or enjoying things anyway.

Yeah, I can see thay viewpoint.
