Haven't heard this one, but I could probably see it if supposed 'normies' started leaning hard into being antis or something. You know, the type of folks who don't understand fandom can get shamelessly freaky and browbeat folks with the purity bullshit just for playing in their sandboxes.

I do miss the fact that these spaces aren't as secret as they used to be, but I wouldn't call that the same as feeling oppressed. It's not like they're stopping me from participating or enjoying things anyway.

Yeah, I have never complained about normies before, and I don't intend to start, but I can see how an influx of people who are brand new to fandom would likely coincide with an influx of anti attitudes. I'm basing this purely on the fact that the vast majority of non-fandom people I know IRL (including intelligent, liberal-minded ones) still think that enjoying certain fictional kinks is problematic and in some way indicative of the person's real life beliefs and/or values and/or desires.

The whole idea that as long as it's fiction it's fine, and that fantasies often do not reflect our literal thoughts or desires, is not at all the norm outside of fandom spaces in my experience.

nah if they meant newbies they would say newbies. by normies they mean normal people with lives and interests, who aren't terminally online and deep into whatever culture it is (usually anime)

There is no difference. Newbies are normies. It used to be that if a normal person got a glimpse of fandom, they'd run away far too fast to stay and get a reputation as a newbie. You have to be at least a bit of a freak to be able to handle the entirety of what fandom is about.
