To be honest, I think it would be best for people to go back to mostly making purchases at brick and mortars, so I wouldn't say I take it personally if people decided not to buy something online. But it does genuinely bother me when people cast aspersions on basic security measures, because when those measures are lacking, many people get badly harmed.

You honestly think individual citizens should be making a conscious effort to give companies positive reinforcement to convince them to keep their customer's data secure?

It's not about convincing companies to keep data secure; it's about the fact that passwords are one of the ways to keep data secure, period. When a bank teller asks to see your ID before allowing you to withdraw from your account, is it "giving them positive reinforcement to convince them to keep your account secure" if you comply? Passwords, passkeys, PINs, etc are similar to IDs. They're a way to make sure that you are you, and to create an extra barrier between a bad actor and your information.

Anon, you need to call this whole thread a wash and go take a break. We know the difference between our bank, taxes, etc needing a password and Papa Johns demanding we make an account just to get a fucking pizza.

The only time my bank card was ever compromised was at the vendor's end, not mine. GenX ain't boomers, we're not out here wobbling on our walkers handing over our SSNs to scammers.

Literally everyone in this thread has said they either grumble and do it if the stakes are high or nope out if the stakes are low.

No one is casting aspersions FFS. We understand security. We make cost/benefit analyses just like corporations.
