Wash behind your ears

(Anonymous) 2026-03-07 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Do most people do this? It was often said when I was a kid, in what seemed to be a kind of joking way... but I've noticed that it can smell bad back there. Like if you touch the skin behind your ears (especially at the top part) your finger will have a nasty smell on it.

So I always wash there, but I'm wondering how common it is?

I also wash my belly button because it gets smelly and can get infected -like one of the creases in it gets painful and possibly comes close to splitting. I'm not sure if most people do though and now I get grossed out thinking about people with unwashed belly buttons and ears.

I wash my hair every day so the hot water and shampoo gets behind my ears anyway. What I have to watch out for is it getting IN my ears.

Not growing potatoes behind your ears?

Did anyone else have adults joke that you would start growing potatoes behind your ears if you didn’t wash there?

Just realized I don’t know how common that is outside of my own family.

oh yeah, corn and potatoes. I'm old but I definitely remember that being widespread in my childhood in the 80s.

I do a quick rise with some water behind my ears during my morning shower but that's all most days. When I wash my hair that area gets a bit more of a clean due to the shampoo I'm using.

I do it when I'm washing my hair, which is 2x a week.

I wash behind my ears daily. Either in the shower or with a washcloth on nonshower days.

I once worked with a person who had visible crud lines going from behind their ears down and it left an impression. Like they were generally presentable but for that area and I remember being disgusted but fascinated, because how? I scrub now because of fear of ever being like that person.

Well, yeah. I sweat a lot and wear glasses, so that area can get gross if I didn't wash behind my ears every time I showered. Ditto my belly button and ears.

Yes, I wash anywhere I've got skin.
