I hate how negative so many fandom spaces have become. I think we've all been here too long. So many people jump straight to the worst conclusions and have closed minds.

Yep. I think it's a lot of things, really: the anti movement, the political climate, less moderation and also less self-moderation, less “your kink is not my kink and that's okay” and more “your kink is disgusting,” etc. It feels like everyone is more comfortable being an AH and, worst of all, they've found support from other AHs to keep being AHs.

Edit: also want to add that fandom is meant to be a creative outlet, so when you're busy defending yourself over every minimal interaction instead of being creative, it stops being fun.

I've been noticing there's a marked increase in... not sure how to put it. Sensitivity? on the internet in general.

People seem to have difficulty understanding neutral remarks and insist that you must have chosen to leave a comment in order to attack them or call them wrong, instead of idk, something neutral like making idle chat, pointing out an observation, or adding more info to what they said. Like they assume every response to them that does NOT begin with an outright positive affirmation like "yes you're so right" must then instead begin with a an automatic, hidden "no, you're wrong" even if nobody said that. As though if you're not replying to take their side, you must then automatically be against them because otherwise why say anything at all?

I wonder if it's because everyone's online now and people forgot how to have normal small talk?

Agreed. A lot of people insist that there was negativity back in the good old days of fandom as well and of course there was. But nothing like there is today, because we didn't have widespread social media where this kind of BS could be amplified and broadcast like lightning. There was, IMO, a lot more "your kink is not my kink and that's okay" enforcement, more "hey remember this is fiction" and a lot less of the mindset that the media you consume (without paying for it!) somehow counts as activism.

yeah I've been part of a fandom for a long time, and I'd been having fun there for awhile but recently it just felt more and more miserable and I took a step back and decided to continue watching the show without dealing as much with the fandom and so far it's been a lot more enjoyable to experience the show without a bunch of other opinions and voices rattling around in my head while I do.

It's not a pissing contest. If either series of allegations are correct, someone still used the show as a way to make themselves cooler or more approachable to their victims. "I like the Simpsons, I'm cool just like you, let me groom then abuse you."

One of the coldest takes I've seen bandied around social media lately is that "The Man" kept you from learning more about Helen Keller as an adult because she was a Communist. Frankly, this is stupid for multiple reasons, but the biggies are thus: 1. Pretty much every suffragist you learned about in school was also a socialist or a communist. They probably called it "pro-labor" in your textbooks unless your school district was real cool. 2. Helen Keller as an adult was a eugenicist. Like, big time. That's why they don't talk about her as an adult all that much. It's not the communism. It's the "I wasn't born blind and deaf, but if I had been I should have been forcibly sterilized for the good of society"ism.

I find it a little silly to pretend that Harry Potter was a book series no one "really" liked or should want to revisit. The series was very popular, and many of us would still be into the books and fanfic were it not for JKR ruining the magic.

EA is being acquired by groups associated with Saudi Arabia and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner. Many people are calling for a boycott, but I'll be honest. The "boycott" of EA's games is going to go exactly the same as the "boycott" of Harry Potter. Hogwarts Legacy was a huge seller. The re-records of the Harry Potter audiobooks are at the top of the Audible charts. People don't know and/or don't care. EA will rock on with their sports games, Battlefield, The Sims, etc being top sellers.

I find it ironic that the man whose life was turned into a film to raise awareness of the involuntary nature of Tourette's is being slated by attendees who were offended by his tics and claim "he meant that shit".

Yes, it's horrible to have a racial slur shouted at you - it is genuinely offensive. But disability can be offensive and unpleasant; the disabled should still get to exist in public spaces and celebrate their own achievements.

... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and while I'm definitely not the world's greatest expert at secret design, I'll try my best. Please note that long comment secrets can be difficult to make with a good end result. Most of the time, I'll give it a shot but might not be able to make secrets where the text is so lengthy that I can't fit it into the limited space.

I'm trying something new with the comment secret thread and extending the deadline to comment until Monday's post goes up. I'll monitor this thread until then, and hope the extra day will be more helpful for everyone.
