Yeah, it feels like there are a few things that should have been done at the venue and in the broadcast that would have helped the situation a lot.

That unpleasant clash of needs and sensitivities is sometimes just inevitable and it requires some compromise and understanding. But you can still try to take steps to keep it from blowing up to that extent.
