Any time I happen to talk about HP with anyone I always throw in a few "pity JK is a transphobe" into the mix.

I think you missed with that analogy. It’s more like acknowledging that people in the world are starving when you yourself talk about wasting food.

It could have a shaming component, but I’d guess it’s much more about establishing that they’re aware of a global issue and checking whether others are on the same page.
